{"id":7478,"date":"2016-01-14T14:08:34","date_gmt":"2016-01-14T19:08:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spinor.info\/weblog\/?p=7478"},"modified":"2016-01-14T15:18:13","modified_gmt":"2016-01-14T20:18:13","slug":"ozymandias","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spinor.info\/weblog\/?p=7478","title":{"rendered":"Ozymandias"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recenly, there was a particular piece of music that caught my attention on CBC&#8217;s The Signal: <a href=\"http:\/\/culturedarm.com\/themes-and-references-in-joanna-newsoms-sapokanikan\/\">Sapokanikan<\/a> by Joanna Newsom.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ky9Ro9pP2gc\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>The song begins with the lines,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The cause is Ozymandian<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The map of Sapokanikan<\/em><br \/>\n<em>is sanded and beveled<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The land lone and leveled<\/em><br \/>\n<em>By some unrecorded and powerful hand.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This made me re-read Shelley&#8217;s timeless poem about the ruined statue of Ozymandias in the desert:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">&#8216;My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:<br \/>\nLook at my works, ye Mighty, and despair!&#8217;<br \/>\nNothing beside remains. Round the decay<br \/>\nOf that colossal wreck, boundless and bare<br \/>\nThe lone and level sands stretch far away.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>And then here is a real-life Ozymandian tale from a few days ago, from China: A 37-meter tall golden statue of Mao erected in the middle of nowhere.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/01\/09\/world\/asia\/china-mao-statue-henan.html\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7479\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7479\" src=\"https:\/\/spinor.info\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/giant-mao.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"675\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spinor.info\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/giant-mao.jpg 675w, https:\/\/spinor.info\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/giant-mao-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The ending, however, is different: After the statue has been ridiculed on Chinese social media (with many quoting from Shelley&#8217;s Ozymandias) the statue was hastily demolished.
