The reason: Following the death of the matriarch, there was a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/sci-tech\/baboon-wars-bloody-battle-for-throne-erupts-at-toronto-zoo-after-matriarch-dies-1.2679033\">power struggle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/sci-tech\/baboon-wars-bloody-battle-for-throne-erupts-at-toronto-zoo-after-matriarch-dies-1.2679033\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7416\" src=\"https:\/\/spinor.info\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/baboon.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spinor.info\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/baboon.jpg 620w, https:\/\/spinor.info\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/baboon-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The reason why I find this fascinating is that these baboons weren&#8217;t fighting for food. They were not fighting for sex. They were not fighting for a more cozy sleeping place or anything else tangible.<\/p>\n<p>No&#8230; they were fighting for <em>power<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>That such an abstract concept not only exists in the animal world but may even prompt a vicious fight might upset those who maintain illusions about the noble animal world.
