{"id":3655,"date":"2012-08-16T08:34:22","date_gmt":"2012-08-16T12:34:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spinor.info\/weblog\/?p=3655"},"modified":"2012-08-16T09:27:05","modified_gmt":"2012-08-16T13:27:05","slug":"the-inviolability-of-embassy-grounds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spinor.info\/weblog\/?p=3655","title":{"rendered":"The inviolability of embassy grounds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the fall of 1956, after Soviet forces crushed Hungary&#8217;s anti-Communist revolution, cardinal <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/J%C3%B3zsef_Mindszenty\">J\u00f3zsef Mindszenty<\/a> sought refuge inside the American embassy in Budapest, where he remained for the next 15 years.<\/p>\n<p>Not even the Communists claimed the right to withdraw the diplomatic status of those embassy grounds or threatened to storm the embassy to arrest Mindszenty.<\/p>\n<p>I am not particularly impressed by Julian Assange&#8217;s narcissism, nor by the latest shenanigans of Wikileaks, including the production of a <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.cnn.com\/2012-07-30\/tech\/tech_web_fake-nyt-editorial_1_wikileaks-ecuadorian-embassy-fake-twitter-account\">fake newspaper editorial<\/a>. But the notion that the United Kingdom <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/story\/2012\/08\/16\/julian-assange-ecuador-uk.html\">might use force<\/a> to remove Mr. Assange from Ecuadorian embassy grounds is just unthinkable. If this threat was meant to impress and intimidate, well, it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-19281492\">didn&#8217;t seem to work very well<\/a>, did it?
