{"id":3310,"date":"2012-07-04T07:30:20","date_gmt":"2012-07-04T11:30:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spinor.info\/weblog\/?p=3310"},"modified":"2012-07-04T07:30:20","modified_gmt":"2012-07-04T11:30:20","slug":"higgs-or-no-higgs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spinor.info\/weblog\/?p=3310","title":{"rendered":"Higgs or no Higgs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I got up early this morning, so I had a chance to study the <a href=\"http:\/\/press.web.cern.ch\/press\/PressReleases\/Releases2012\/PR17.12E.html\">results from LHC<\/a>, namely the preliminary publications from the ATLAS and CMS detectors.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.atlas.ch\/news\/2012\/latest-results-from-higgs-search.html\">According to the ATLAS team<\/a>, the likelihood that the event count they see around 126 GeV is due purely to chance is less than one in a million. The result is better than 5\u03c3, which makes it almost certain that they observed <em>something<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/spinor.info\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ATLAS6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3311\" title=\"ATLAS6\" src=\"http:\/\/spinor.info\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ATLAS6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spinor.info\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ATLAS6.jpg 500w, https:\/\/spinor.info\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ATLAS6-300x220.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cms.web.cern.ch\/news\/observation-new-particle-mass-125-gev\">The CMS detector observed<\/a> many possible types of Higgs decay events. When they combined them all, they found that the probability that all this is due purely to chance is again less than one in a million&#8230; in their case, an almost 5\u03c3 result. I have to say it&#8217;s beginning to look like it&#8217;s both quacking and walking like a duck&#8230; but CERN is cautious, and rightfully so.
