{"id":1895,"date":"2010-12-28T02:19:48","date_gmt":"2010-12-28T02:19:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spinor.info\/weblog\/?p=1895"},"modified":"2010-12-28T02:19:48","modified_gmt":"2010-12-28T02:19:48","slug":"putinization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spinor.info\/weblog\/?p=1895","title":{"rendered":"Putinization"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Washington Post finally took notice: not one but two articles, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/12\/27\/AR2010122702864.html\">an opinion piece<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/12\/26\/AR2010122601791.html\">an editorial<\/a> about my country of birth, the latter titled The Putinization of Hungary.<\/p>\n<p>Once again, I wish I could disagree but I cannot. Hungary may have been ruled by the Socialist Party for the past eight years, but even though they are the formal successors of the once all-powerful Hungarian Socialist Workers Party, it&#8217;s not them but Orban&#8217;s Fidesz who carry the real legacy of the Kadar era.<\/p>\n<p>Or perhaps both do (I certainly have few illusions about the purity of the Socialists), but the Socialists didn&#8217;t have the two-thirds parliamentary majority that Orban enjoys. Which gives Orban effectively unlimited power: with his two thirds majority, he can dismantle independent institutions and rewrite the country&#8217;s constitution.<\/p>\n<p>Both of which he&#8217;s busy doing.<\/p>\n<p>And I keep thinking that it was good that Hungary once had democratic government&#8230; too bad it didn&#8217;t last very long. Or am I succumbing to hype and writing democracy&#8217;s epitaph prematurely?
