{"id":10191,"date":"2020-09-24T02:06:50","date_gmt":"2020-09-24T06:06:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spinor.info\/weblog\/?p=10191"},"modified":"2020-09-24T02:06:50","modified_gmt":"2020-09-24T06:06:50","slug":"canada-and-the-us-civil-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spinor.info\/weblog\/?p=10191","title":{"rendered":"Canada and the US Civil War"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reading about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/election-us-2020-54274115\">Trump&#8217;s refusal<\/a> to commit to the peaceful transfer of power, I suddenly felt the urge to read up on the history of our <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canada_and_the_American_Civil_War\">Canadian provinces during the US Civil War<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As it turns out, Canadian provinces did well economically. And some of Canada&#8217;s enduring institutions, seemingly undemocratic yet serving as effective guarantees of political stability and safeguards against excessive partisanship, such as the appointed Senate, were born in the wake of the lessons of that conflict.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10192\" src=\"https:\/\/spinor.info\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/canada-us-civil-war.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spinor.info\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/canada-us-civil-war.jpg 660w, https:\/\/spinor.info\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/canada-us-civil-war-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Even so, I worry about the future.
